This collection is a treasure-trove that reveals all the delights of the traditions of the vaqueiros (cattle breeders), tales of xanas or water nymphs, prayers to the mythological figure of Nuberu, the flavour of cider from the local taverns known as chigres, which have been carefully stored up by generation after generation. The intangible stuff that dreams are made of, or those traditional tales known only to the experts are here included to tempt the reader like the aroma of the local skimmed cheese that drifts out from the cave where they acquired all the richness of their body and flavour. All the books in this series have been written by experts with an in-depth knowledge of the character and geography of Asturias, and illustrated by true magicians, skilled at portraying the culture of a land with a heart forged from the mountain and a skin created by the sea.

ASTURIAS PARA EL RECUERDOTEXT _ Gerardo Díaz QuirósPHOTOGRAPHY _ Ignacio Acuña
The creative skills of almost 40 local artists trace the history of the traditional occupations and customs of the Asturian people. In a tribute to landscape and custom art, this book, which features almost 100 works by 38 Asturian painters, is divided into three main areas: the countryside, sea and industry. In the first of these sections, more than thirty works portray rural life in the Principality, enabling us to glimpse into traditional homes, farming work and the tasks carried out by women in the home. The section dedicated to the sea features twenty-seven paintings illustrating the work of sailors and their world: Asturias’ ports, their vessels, the various aspects of their work, and the role played by their wives in this economic activity. Finally, the work also portrays the industries that brought considerable changes to the region from the mid-19th century onwards. Asturias para el recuerdo ends with an extensive tribute, made up of more than twenty paintings, dedicated to the world of industry and mining, as well as the changes the movement from the farm to the factory brought for the region’s inhabitants. |
