POPULAR ARCHITECTUREManuel Caamaño Suárez, professor emeritus of the School of Technical Architecture at the University of A Coruña, is the author of this magnificent work, one of the most detailed studies carried out to date into the popular architecture of Galicia, raised to the status of ethnographical heritage.The principal aim is to rescue it from oblivion, and to defend and conserve it as an essential part of our collective identity. The work includes a detailed and exhaustive insight into this “architecture without architects” and features the study of bibliographical sources and documents, as well as a thorough analysis of architectural forms and types of construction, addressing issues such as the forms, usage and appropriate use of materials, rationality, etc. In addition, questions such as the physical setting, human means, the transformation of our landscape, the occupation of territory, building techniques and trades, the various types of zones and attributive constructions (associated with economic activities, commercialization or handcrafted and pre-industrial production) are also covered in this work. Also worthy of mention is the magnificent quality of the graphics featured in this work, which include drawings of an exceptionally high standard reflecting the ethnographic and architectural content. Winner of the Antón Losada Diéguez Award (2004) and the Crítica-Galicia Prize (2004), Hércules de Ediciones has now republished the Galician version of this work, which was first published in 2003 by the Galician Council of Quantity Surveyors and Technical Architects, and has also produced the first ever Spanish version |
