The Galicia Project’s new Law and Legislation Series successfully tackles the challenge of providing an in-depth insight into the Galicia’s legal system published in work of academic rigour yet which is also accessible to the layman. A proof of the fact that Galician Law is no longer restricted purely to its initial framework of Common Law and has now acquired legislative status can be found in the various volumes addressing the principles and sources of law (those particular and acknowledged by the Spanish Constitution), real property and land rights, rights of access, as well as inheritance law.

This work, which includes an excellent new study of expert Galician jurists, also describes our principal legislative bodies, such as the “Testamento mancomunado” (Common Will) or the “Compañía familiar gallega” (Galician Family Company), both of which are unique to this region. Major efforts have been made to ensure both the use of the correct terminology –appropriate for legal matters– and that the explanations of complex legal terms are comprehensible to as wide a segment of the population as possible, in an attempt to strengthen one of the principal hallmarks of our region’s identity.
