In recent years voices have begun to be heard, and in 2017 in a special way, that tell us that we are seeing a trend in forest fires towards increasingly serious and uncontrollable situations. Climate change, a growing disarticulated urbanism and the lack of prevention measures are blamed…
This book tries to answer all these questions. The book opens with a historical description of the use (and abuse) of fire in Galicia up to the situation we live in today, which begins with the dismantling of the agro-forest system around to the sixties of the last century. The following two chapters are dedicated to this socioeconomic problem. Next, the alternatives that try to face the future and the measures of fight and prevention, as well as the damages to goods and people. The last two chapters refer to education and social responsibility of Galicians, singular and decisive aspects in the fight against fire.
This book was written under the impression of the still alive images of flames that walked with an unusual speed from the Portuguese border to Terra de Montes, of a few sparks that flew and caught in the city of Vigo or of fires that with devastating persistence, razed the peaks of the Ourense mountains. But also with the responsibility of the many years that most of the authors of this book have been dealing with the problem of forest fires in Galicia. They are different expert looks, stimulated by the emotions of this unfortunate year 2017, written under the urgency of the moment, but also tempered and contrasted by the many experiences and reflections that gave rise to all the fires that were ravaging Galicia in this last and long incendiary stage of its history.
